With Broom as our Ally
Broom has been used in Celtic and pagan traditions for purification, sweeping away negative energy, and creating boundaries. It is also linked to banishing that which no longer serves.
A Ritual for Reclaiming Freedom and Living Your Best Life
Materials Needed:
A bundle of broom herb (dried or fresh)
A small fireproof bowl (for burning) or an earth pit
A black candle (representing the shadow cast upon you)
A white candle (representing your true, unshadowed self)
A small broom or besom (optional, for symbolic sweeping)
A mirror (for reflection and affirmation)
A bowl of water (for purification)
Paper and pen
Sacred Space & Preparation
Set up your ritual space outdoors under the eclipsing moon, or if inside, position yourself near a window where you can see the moon’s light shifting.
Cleanse your space by sweeping in a counter-clockwise direction using a small broom or your hand, saying:
“I sweep away the dust of illusion, clearing space for truth’s intrusion.”
Light your black candle, acknowledging the shadow that has fallen upon you—words, expectations, or energy from others that obscure your true self.
Invocation of the Eclipse
Face the moon and say:
"Luna, wrapped in crimson veil,
Your shadowed form tells a tale.
Darkness cast by outer force,
Yet light returns its rightful course."
PLAY MEDITATION
The Broom’s Magic & Releasing the Shadows.
Hold a sprig of broom in your hands and reflect on the influences that have darkened your spirit, old wounds, words of others, limitations placed upon you.
Write them down on a piece of paper.
Crush the broom herb in your hands, infusing it with your intent to sweep away these imposed shadows. Whisper into the herb:
“Like the broom that clears the way, I remove what clouds my day.
Shadows cast, not mine to keep
Let them fall, let them sweep.”
Sprinkle the crushed broom over your written words.
Burning the Shadows
Light the paper and broom herb in the fireproof bowl or pit. As the smoke rises, chant:
“By fire’s light and ember’s glow,
Shadows fade, they now let go.
Not my burden, not my name,
I return to me again.”
As the flame dies down, light the white candle, symbolizing the unveiling of your true self.
Mirror Work & Affirmation
Look into the mirror, allowing the moon’s eclipse to remind you that your light was never truly lost, it was only obscured.
Speak aloud:
“No longer clouded. No longer burdened,
I am seen. I am free. I am the light beyond the shadow.”
Dip your fingers into the bowl of water and anoint your forehead, heart, tummy and feet, symbolising purification and new beginnings.
Closing the Ritual
Thank the moon for her lessons and her light.
If you have a besom, sweep around you one last time, saying:
“The past is cleared, the path made bright,
I walk in freedom, bathed in light.”
Snuff out the candles and leave the area in silence, letting the last moments of the eclipse mark your transition into a freer self.
Post-Ritual Integration
Take a cleansing bath infused with broom and rosemary.
Write down any insights or emotions that arose during the ritual.
In the coming days, take small actions that affirm your freedom from the shadows that once held you.
