With Silver Birch - Birch or substitute with Willow
Well the Full Flower moon is nearly upon us Monday 12 May 2025 at 5.56pm in the uk and up here in North East England the Hawthorn is in full bloom, she smells so sweet and looks so pretty. Hawthorn stands at the edge, between fields, between worlds, this world, the otherworld and fairy realms.
As you know I like to write rituals for the full moon and post them here. So I thought I'd write this full moon ritual around that theme where we'll connect with the Moon Goddess for inner truth and self-discovery. It's designed for solo practitioners but would be easy to adapt it to do with a couple of friends..
Symbols of Hawthorn in the ritual
Thresholds & Boundaries: Hawthorn stands at the edge, between fields, between worlds.
Just as you now stand between who you've been and who you're becoming.
Heart Healing: Its blossoms speak to love and courage; its thorns remind us that boundaries protect sacred growth.
Faery Wisdom & the Hidden Realms: Hawthorn is often a gateway to the unseen and perfect for invoking revelation under a full moon.
A piece of hawthorn: blossom, small branch, dried leaf, or even a thorn (safely handled)
Charcoal Disk and Dried Sage for smoke cleansing
A white or silver candle (to represent the Moon Goddess) - Fire hazard. Never leave lighted candles and incense unattended
A small bowl of water or a larger one if you would like to use it to meditate with or even scry. If you can use water that has been blessed or moon-charged, if possible
A mirror
Journal and pen
"Moon Mother, Guardian of Secrets, silver and fair,
I stand at the threshold in the moonlit air.
By hawthorn bloom and Beltane fire,
Reveal what stirs in my soul’s desire."
Let the air shift around you. Imagine the hawthorn’s branches arching around you like a faery alcove, sacred, protective, and mysterious.
Now let's cleanse our space
Light the charcoal disk Waft the sage smoke gently around yourself and the space. Pass your mirror through the smoke if using one.
Say:
"With this sacred smoke, I clear the way.
Let thorn and blossom show truth today.
In Hawthorne’s sight, I walk unafraid
Cloaked in moonlight, whole and unshamed."
Now hold the mirror or gaze into the candle flame reflected upon the hawthorn bloom. Allow your thoughts to settle. Place your hand over your heart and say:
"Lady of the Moon, walk with me now.
With Hawthorn’s heart and blossom’s vow,
What truth waits within the thorny wood?
What truth be known for my highest good?"
Stay in this moment. Let the symbols arise: the thorn (what you’ve resisted), the bloom (what wants to unfold), the tree itself (what holds it all).
Dip your fingers in the water and anoint:
Brow for clarity
Heart for courage
Womb or solar plexus for creation and power
Say:
"By water, by branch, by ancient tree,
I am open to what I am ready to see.
Not all truths are soft, but all truth is mine,
And through this knowing, I align."
Take some time in meditation, perhaps looking into the flame, or into the bowl of water you used to bless yourself.
Spend some time with the goddess and let her truth rise in you.
Take your pen and journal. You may begin with: Here are three pointers for you to use, or you may just want to journal.
The important thing is to let the words flow freely and write exactly what comes to mind.
What inner truth has been hiding in the thorns?
What am I protecting with these boundaries, and what wants to bloom?
What am I now ready to know about myself?
When you’re ready to close, hold your piece of hawthorn and whisper a personal thank you to the Moon Goddess and to the spirit of the tree. If you feel moved, offer a strand of your hair or a drop of water to the earth as a sign of gratitude.
Say:
"From blossom to thorn, from moonlight to bone,
I walk through this threshold no longer alone.
Truth is my companion, fierce and fair
I am seen, I am whole, I am aware."
Blow out the candle. Let the hawthorn remain on your altar or bedside as a guardian of what you’ve revealed.
